…a Bible student's notes…

Written 10/07/2011……

My pain and suffering has increased, perhaps, 100 fold. I think I must have thought that it was already as bad as it could be – wrong. I have been experimenting answering folks’ questions concerning how I feel with the varied list that it is, and they always interrupt by having to see someone else, having to leave, etc. I believe it is because they don’t know what to say – overwhelmed.

That’s what I am – overwhelmed. I know that going to the doctor I will be asked, “What is your chief complaint?” Even the doctors are overwhelmed. I have been treated as “old” and unable to know my own body. I have been left alone by the physician as he attends to other matters. Since Dr. Cannon died, not one doctor has heard me “finish” my story.

I accept this from my Lord’s hands. I need to suffer. I need to weep. I need to climb upon my Father’s lap and trust. I need help. I need intercession.

A few days ago, I picked up a book I have of Elisabeth Elliot’s – “A Path Through Suffering.” She has been a mentor of sorts to me and I know some of her sufferings.

There were some underlings because I had read this book already. It has my writing inside the cover page that I bought it at J.O.Y. Bookstore in April, 1991. My heart “sinks.” This date is during a family tragedy of which I will never recover and begins my pain and sufferings.

The book falls open to a noted page inside – “read on day before cleaning out Joy’s room at Elizabethtown College.” Wanna’ know what I have underlined?

Why this waste?

Why this sacrifice?

Why this, when things seemed so promising?”

I have underlined some more: “Often there seems to be no visible reason for our having to let go. But, life, our spiritual life in Christ, depends on it. The life-out-of-death cycle must proceed.”

I turn the page and there is the date, 5/9/91, and more underlinings.

Romans 10:17 – again

 April 30th, 2012, Monday – I can once again move out to our little screened porch. The pollen had been so strong that it ran me back inside for a couple of weeks. Bob has filled the bird baths and there are some happy birds entertaining me. He is now watering the blueberries. It will take at least an hour – or more – so, I will wash clothes later. Fine with me. Mornings are the best out here and my chores do not bother me here. The blueberries take priority. They are abundantly covered in berries and are promising a very good harvest if Bob and the weather work together.

As I was setting up, my Bible fell open to Daniel, chapter 4, and I have been reading the chapters backwards to chapter 1. I’ve told you about reading verses backwards for a fuller, better understanding. Romans 10:17 is one of my favorites. I did a word study – especially the prepositions. Romans 10:17 “So faith [comes] from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” (NAS) After some word studies, I make notes and the verse reads: “Then, the faith out of hearing, and the hearing through the word (“rhema”) concerning Christ.” There is no verb in this verse and has to be supplied in English.

Then, I wrote my paraphrase frontwards: “The immediate origin of the faith that pleases God comes out from the act of hearing – and – the act of hearing comes through the means of specific word concerning Christ (the Messiah).”

Backwards: “The word pertaining to and concerning Christ (His title in the coming kingdom age) – through the act of hearing – produces the faith that pleases God.”

Here’s the version of this verse that I wrote in 2009. It also tells of an interesting event in our lives: https://searchfortreasure.wordpress.com/2009/07/15/those-flaps-on-each-side-of-our-head/

Pain and Sufferings, part 2…

The 5/9/91 date is significant because we came back to Chattanooga from PA a month later on June 8, 1991. We had left on June 8, 1989 for a job change Bob felt was necessary. We arrived home exactly two years later – broke – no jobs – and facing a family crises. Page 74 in E. E.’s book, “A Path through Suffering” begins with a word I had highlighted in green – “Relinquishment…..”

The last paragraph begins with this sentence: “It is a merciful Father who strips us when we need to be stripped, as the tree needs to be stripped of its blossoms.”

Sounds severe to be stripped bare, doesn’t it? A severe mercy! A severe love!

Raw emotions followed us home. We were laid bare, open to more wounding and sufferings.

We are twenty years on this healing journey – emotional; but, what began as physical, has not retreated. (I firmly believe much of my physical pain would be here at my present age anyway, having inherited many maladies from my mom.) However, when the physical worsens, my emotions need attention, also. The two are so entwined, separation is impossible. I must – MUST – go to the Lord. Only He has the balm for my spirit, soul, and body.

And, sometimes, he reminds me of a book still left on a shelf.

(Not so many there since I have a Kindle.)

Blessed Relinquishment!  He Controls All.

Job 40:1 ¶ Then the LORD said to Job,
 2 “Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who reproves God answer it.”
 3 Then Job answered the LORD and said,
 4 “Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to Thee? I lay my hand on my mouth.
 5 “Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; Even twice, and I will add no more.”
 6 ¶ Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm, and said,
 7 “Now gird up your loins like a man; I will ask you, and you instruct Me.
 8 “Will you really annul My judgment? Will you condemn Me that you may be justified?

March 14th, 12:00 noon…

The Lord has been so good!  No matter which way my condition goes, I am glad it has happened.  I am so at peace that it has to be because of seeing the things that are unseen.  For several years I have been fascinated with time.  It is a commodity to be saved, spent, and redeemed.  I am in the redeeming stage of time and this means I can even slow time.  I’ll leave the speeding of time to other poor souls that don’t know better.  Here are some of the blessings of this week:

A beautiful site by a young mother of 6:  http://www.aholyexperience.com/2011/02/why-its-really-okay-you-need-to-slow-down/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+HolyExperience+%28Holy+Experience%29  Be sure to read every word and turn speakers on.

And, there’s a time for everything under the sun:

A Time for Everything

Eccl: 3:1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

2 a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3 a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

NOTHING is untimely with God!

Thank you for your prayers,  mary

A Speed Bump in our Race of Faith…or…running in slow motion…

…..or,  an injury in the race….or, running numb…..or, running scared!

I have a new body part to name.

An Invader.

An Adversary?

A Stranger.

So, I shall call him, “Darth.”

He has gathered his army together in my lower left abdomen – perhaps about at my left ovary (the only organ remaining there 30 years after surgery).

I have seen his shape from the spyglass of a CT scan.

Appropriately, it’s about the size of an egg.

I have no plan of attack, as yet; so, he is safe for now.  His hideout was discovered too late yesterday to gather my army.

Will keep you posted.

Keep The Faith.

Keep Running.

Keep Seeking!

Keep loving my husband – only more intensely!

“FREE HEALTHWISE EXPO”…….

The above title was the subject line on one of my emails this morning.  In the body of this communication is the list of important guests and their topics; also, there will be healthy snacks.  It is September 26th and Nutrition World is one of its sponsors.  They are expecting attendance to equal that in large surrounding cities.  There will be valuable information and probably worth the time to attend.

I’ve got something healthy for your plate this morning.  This is a continuation from yesterday and here are the verses to review:

As a reminder, below are the 12 instances that “G5198 appears in the N. T.  You can observe its different translations and I included Thayer’s definition.  Review these scriptures.  Observe what, who, were, when, and how the word is used.  It wouldn’t hurt to read each in its context.

 1.  Lu 5:31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

 2.  Lu 7:10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

 3.  Lu 15:27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

4.  1Ti 1:10For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

5.  1Ti 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

 6. 2Ti 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

 7.  2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

8.  Tit 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sounddoctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. {as…: or, in teaching}

9.  Tit 1:13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

10.  Tit 2:1 ¶ But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

11.  Tit 2:2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. {sober: or, vigilant}

12.  3Jo 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. {wish: or, pray}   (KJV)

 G5198  ὑγιαίνω    hugiainō  Part of Speech: verb Thayer Definition:

1) to be sound, to be well, to be in good health

2) metaphorically

2a) of Christians whose opinions are free from any mixture of error

2b) of one who keeps the graces and is strong

 We are going to observe only one verse of all these – and it is packed full!

 1Ti 6:3 “If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;”

 Oh, my, I get so excited about this verse!  Can you see it!?

 Consenting to wholesome (healthy) words …….the words of our Lord Jesus Christ….is the doctrine according to godliness.  And the way these words are arranged in this sentence, they have a “trickle down” effect:

 I consent to wholesome, healthy words FIRST  –  no junk food!!

 THEN, I am told exactly what to eat – the words of my Lord (We will most definitely have to carefully observe what exactly our Lord taught and to whom.  I think this is the most distorted junk food being taught today!)

At this point, I am reminded of John, chapter 6.  We cannot go over the whole chapter, but how about verse 27:”Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man shall give to you, for on Him the Father, even God, has set His seal.” (NAS)  And, verse 35: “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” (NAS)

 The “logos” of our Lord is the doctrine according to godliness – and I have read ahead in 1 Timothy 6!  Verse 6: “Godliness, with contentment, is great gain.”  Now, that’s the way to gain weight!!  Remember the weight of glory?

 2Co 4:16-18: “Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.   For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

What’s in a Word………

I wish I knew more about the origin of languages.  Our GRANDdaughter is taking Latin in her Classical Home School studies and I do so hope and pray she does not just learn enough to pass tests, but that she develops the love of words.  My mom had taken Latin in high school, so she would even repeat the verb tenses in a “sing-song” voice as she cooked.  I remember hearing her making sense of something she was reading, when she came to an unfamiliar word, by taking it apart to “cipher” its origin.

My grandmother lived with us – mom’s mom.  She wrote poetry, having been published in several anthologies.  She sent some of her poems to Nashville and they were recorded as hymns.  She loved words and putting them together.

The love of words can be influenced by one’s background.  Words, their usage, inflection, and meanings were important in our household; but I know from whence my deep-down love and adoration for God’s Word came – from Him, Whose law is perfect, restoring the soul.  You can have this, also.  Just ask!  He delights in doing this for you.

I will give you a few verses for inspiration:

“Ps 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words; As silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.”  –  Does this verse even need my commentary!?  “Pure” – each individual word refined (purified) 7 times – a perfect number.

 Jer 15:16  Thy words were found and I ate them, And Thy words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Thy name, O LORD God of hosts.”   –  Words cause Jeremiah joy and delight.  The study of words does this.  It can for you, too.

“Pr 30:5 Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.”  –  God is a shield of protection to us as we know His Word.

  Reminds me of Eph. 6:16 and Romans 10:17.  We cannot say we have faith if we do not study and know God’s Word!  As a child of God, you must grow past being spoon-fed.  And, talk about junk food!  Just what I read and run across in the every day world out there being “taught” as the Word is junk food!  You can refer back to the post about “health” food for a little study on this subject; but to be healthy, you must devour healthy doctrine.

  You are what you eat!

THE REAL HEALTH CARE CRISES…………

HAVE YOU BEEN DOING YOUR JAMES ASSIGNMENT?  Ah, Ha, you thought I had forgotten.  I just got your attention because of that title up there, perhaps.  This is the time of year that color pencils are plentiful and on sale.  Oh, how I wish I needed some; but, I have so many that I could stock a small store!  Crayola brand does bleed through.  Those designed for Bibles will be the best for you.  So- school has begun; and even if you home school, you have time for study.  Whether your children are at a school building or in a designated room in your home, you have time!  I do not accept any excuse!

Back to James – and having health (which is different from not being sick!).  Biblical health insurance is Biblical!   Our Lord healed the sick (and still does in various and sundry ways), but there is something more important than being healed.  It is being healthy!

From my purple sticky note in my Bible at the beginning of James:  “James presents a series of tests by which our soul salvation’s progress can be determined.  James is concerned about the development of soul salvation.”  (See August 5th entry if you need to refresh your memory.  The definition of soul salvation is in a nutshell at the bottom of the blog for that day.)

James appears to have varied themes; however, I believe they all have one common goal found in the last verse of the last chapter: 5:20 b – “…………save his soul from death……..”  There is no insurance policy that can keep us from physical death.  It is an “appointment” we must keep.  (Hebrews 9:27- “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”)  It is the judgment that most people dread or just refuse to admit  to be true.  It is this judgment that will determine our admittance and participation in the age to come or “death” – separation from seeing, entering, and participating in this coming rule of our Lord.  There is a marked difference in the word, “die” in Hebrews and the word, “death” in James 5:20.   We MUST die – but we do not have to experience death –  in the age to come!

Open your Bibles to James, chapter 5.  You may have noticed the theme of praying for the sick, anointing with oil, etc.  Boy, that’s where my mind went when I was so sick.  However, long ago I discovered a theme in the previous verses to this.  I am quoting from my NAS version:  v.3b – “…it is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure.”      v. 4b – “…the Lord of Sabaoth.”     v. 7b – “…until the coming of the Lord.”     v. 8b – “…the coming of the Lord is at hand.”     v. 9b – “…the judge is standing right at the door.”     v. 12b – …”fall under judgment.”

Then in verses 13 through 18, examples of sickness, suffering, anointing, and prayer are given – especially the example concerning Elijah.

In verses 19 and 20 – “My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth, and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins.” – You must recognize that the overall theme of this chapter does not change in the middle nor at this point!  This is a brother still being discussed.  The is the coming judgment still being discussed.  This is still soul salvation – or not – that is still being discussed.

So – let’s explore REAL health:

ALL the scriptures printed below have the same Greek word meaning “health” or “healthy:”

 – this is Strong’s #G5198.

 Vines definition –  hugianio (G5198) denotes “to be healthy, sound, in good health” (Eng., “hygiene”), rendered “mayest be in health,” in 3Jo_1:2; rendered “safe and sound” in Luk_15:27. See SAFE, D, No. 2, SOUND, WHOLE, B, No. 1.

 Thayer Definition:

1) to be sound, to be well, to be in good health

2) metaphorically

2a) of Christians whose opinions are free from any mixture of error

2b) of one who keeps the graces and is strong

 4.  1Ti 1:10For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

 5.  1Ti 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

 6.  2Ti 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

 7.  2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

 8.  Tit 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. {as…: or, in teaching}

 9.  Tit 1:13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be soundin the faith;

11.  Tit 2:1 ¶ But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:

 12. Tit 2:2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. {sober: or, vigilant}

 13. 3Jo 1:2Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. (KJV)

Let’s talk about # 1  –  Luke 5:31   – The immediate context for this verse begins in verse 17 and goes through verse 32.  Read it.  The literal rendering of v. 17b is “…the power of the Lord for their healing” was present to heal the Pharisees and teachers.  Others came to Him for physical healing, but He had power to heal those Pharisees – and they were not physically sick!  The Lord’s healing, in this case of the paralyzed man, was of his sins to teach the Pharisees something – “That you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earthto forgive sins.”  The Pharisees had no sin!  They could not make the connection.  They were well, not sick, and not sinful, and not paralyzed; besides this Man eats with tax-gatherers and sinners!”  He was the Great Physician for the Phairsees; and they refused to receive health!  They were already “healthy” and had no need of this physician!

The word, “sick,” has two Strong’s numbers:  G2192 – “echo” and G2560 – “kakos.”   Summary:  The ones needing a physician esteem themselves to be ill and miserable, either/or in spirit, soul, or body.

So much emphasis is put on the physical healing today that the intended message of our Lord is obscured.

(BY THE WAY, “HEALTHY” IS ONLY FOUND IN LUKE – OF THE FOUR GOSPELS – THREE TIMES LISTED ABOVE.  HE WAS A PHYSICIAN BY OCCUPATION.)

In # 2, the centurion recognized Jesus’ authority to heal with worded commands.  Jesus marveled at this man’s faith!  He knew much more than the Pharisees!  Luke 7:2-10

In # 3, why do you think the Father “received his son back as “healthy?” Luke 15:27  Because he acknowledged he needed his father and he repented – something the Pharisees, in general, refused to do.

NOW – can you understand Mark 2:17 – “……It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

In numbers 4 through 12, you need to notice what the word “healthy” is describing:  “healthy doctrine,”  “healthy words,”  “healthy faith,” and “healthy faith, charity, patience.”

Now, look at #13 – 3John 2 – Can you forget all you’ve heard before, and put this into the context of what our Lord is showing us about health?  This reference mentions the soul as prospering.  Prospereth means “to help on the road, journey.”

To be healthy on this journey of the salvation of our soul that will be revealed at the judgment seat of Christ,  we must consume healthy doctrine!

                                                             – a subject for a later date!
