Falling Short of God’s Rest

Even the first verse of Hebrews, chapter 4, is packed with meaning!  Hebrews 4:1  Therefore, let us fear lest, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it.

We have established that God’s Sabbath day of rest will be the coming 1,000 years following the 6,000 years.  Actually, it is almost time for the 7th day!  It has been almost 6,000 years since God’s restoration of the original earth.  Get ready!  Why?  We can “fall short” of this “rest.”  Thayer defines this word like this:    behind

1a) to come late or too tardily
1a1) to be left behind in the race and so fail to reach the goal, to fall short of the end
1a2) metaphorically fail to become a partaker, fall back from

This definition reminds me of the parable of the 10 virgins.  You can review it in Matthew 25.  But, the real example to be meditated upon is the children of Israel after they were delivered from the Egyptians, refusing to go into the promised land because of the hardships they would encounter.   Beware of the “cares of this life.”
