…a Bible student's notes…

Entering God’s Sabbath

I think that the theme of Hebrews 4 could be, “Entering God’s Sabbath.”  We must keep reading the Bible – all the way through – to hear God expound upon His Own Word.  We read yesterday that “…by the seventh day God completed His work which He had done; and He rested (sabbathed) on the seventh day……then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it (set it apart; i.e. from the other 6 days.)”  See Genesis 2:1-3.  This very word is written about 73 more times in the Old Testament, usually translated “Sabbath” or “rest(ed).”

Then, we come to Hebrews 4 and we get the meaning God meant to make from His actions in Genesis.  He works at restoring the earth for 5 days, on the 6th day creates the image of Himself (in three parts), builds a bride, and orders them to have dominion over the earth.  The next day, God sabbaths, blesses the sabbath, and makes it Holy.  (See, also, Ex. 20:11)  Now, turn to Hebrews 4, and you should be able to read with understanding the significance of God’s actions.

However, a warning – the actions and belief system of His children in the wilderness enters the picture for our admonition!
