…a Bible student's notes…

“…but of God were born.”

Refer to yesterday’s reading regarding the Father of lights —–He sends “the True Light” in John 1, let’s begin at verse 9 and go through verse 13:   (I will add some “helps” as you read.)

John 1:9 There was the true light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
John 1:11 He came to His own (neuter – “own things” i.e. His kingdom, throne, etc), and those who were His own (masculine – meaning His Own people – the perishing sheep of the House of Israel) did not receive (“paralambano” – to receive near, associate with) Him.
John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right (ability, privilege) to become children (“teknon” – maturing children – not “sons” as in KJV) of God, even to those who believe (present tense, active voice) in (“eis” – into, meaning a motion to an object with the purpose of reaching it or touching it.) His name,
John 1:13 who were born (aorist, passive, indicative) not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (literally: “but of God were born”).

Note verse 13 that when one is “born of God,” it is in the passive voice, meaning the subject was acted upon!  Aorist tense means it was an event, happening at a point in time.  Indicative mood means it is a reality, a certainty from the speaker’s point of view.

No one born of God used their own will, flesh, or blood.  It was all of HIM!  We can understand this from an earthly point of view:  we did not choose our own parents or family.

Acts 16:31 says, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved.  “Believe,” in this case is in the aorist, active, imperative – meaning you perform the believing at some point in time.  Imperative means it is a command.

For this study of “brethren,” we are considering those “born of God.”  And, we will need a working understanding of His NAME.
