Let Love of the Brethren continue…

Heb. 13:1 – “Let the love of the brethren (noun,  singular,  feminine) continue (“abide” – present, active, imperative).”

Take note that this verse is an imperative – meaning it is a commandment.  It assumes that brotherly love has already begun at some point; and, here we are commanded to abide in this condition of love – “phileo” – brotherly love.

Not everyone is our “brother,” so it motivates us to seek a definition.  Wuest says that the word means “from the same womb, thus having the same source.”  Let’s search out the Bible to see ….

To be Biblical, “brethren” will have not only the same birth, but will be conceived from the seed of the same father.  They will be “born of God.”  “Born from above” because every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of light, with whom there is no variation, or shadow of turning.”   (James 1:17)

Verse 18 of James 1:  “In the exercise of His will ( aorist, passive) He brought us forth (to give birth to) by the word of truth, so that we might be, as it were, the first fruits among His creatures.”
