…a Bible student's notes…

after nap, Downy woodpeckers, and the necessity of doctrine….

 Journal, 05.06.2012, Sunday

It’s late afternoon (5:45 pm) on a lazy Sunday. Nap in my Stressless chair. Lunch with two pleasant couples at Jason’s Deli after church. Sunday School lesson and church pastor teachings were thought provoking and even coordinated.

Neighbors are finished with grass mowers and such like. Black-capped cat bird is whining as he sits on the bird bath because the water is too low. And, I am thanking the Lord for this, our “vacation” home with country living in the city. The screened porch is all mine for now, as Bob and Rusty take trash can down to the road for tomorrow’s pickup.

Actually, our Sunday began last night as Bob and I sat on this porch until 10 pm instead of watching videos. (We are watching two good series on Amazon Prime. “London Hospital” and “Lark Rise to Candleford.” Good pop corn series.) Bob watched the moon get bigger and brighter – I was sitting too far back on the porch to see that direction. It was cool and we just talked. Ahhhh.

I have been privy to a precious scene as a Downy woodpecker feeds its young. I have seen many juveniles being fed by their parents, but never a woodpecker. The dad eats a bunch of suet, then takes a bite back to the branch where the little one is begging – with all its heart – and then starts all over again – without tiring. The juvenile tries his wings while dad is away by going to other branches in the tree, but dad flies straight to him every time. He must have GPS.

Last week I did a little study on “doctrine” or “teaching” and will share bits with ya’ll this week. So, stay tuned. It begins like this:

Parables teach doctrine

Mark 4:2 And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,

Without doctrine, no profit in the age to come

2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Teaching (Doctrine) Saves

1Ti 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine (teaching); continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Teaching,” “learning,” and “doctrine” are all from one Greek word, didaskalia” – #1319 in Thayer’s Dictionary – meaning:

1) teaching, instruction

2) teaching

2a) that which is taught, doctrine

2b) teachings, precepts

It is interesting that in Hebrews 6:1 that “logos” (“word”) has been translated “doctrine.” “THE WORD” taught doctrine. See Mark 4, above.
