…a Bible student's notes…

Review of LBS, part 1…

Post for 120127, Friday

I am posting a review of what we have covered in Ladies Bible Study.

We began by reading aloud Hebrews 1-2:3. Let me put that here for you and all of you, read it aloud to yourself and anybody else that may hear you.

1 ¶ God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways,

2 in these last days has spoken to us in [His] Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high;

4 ¶ having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

5 For to which of the angels did He ever say, “THOU ART MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN THEE”? And again, “I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME”?

6 And when He again brings the first-born into the world, He says, “AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM.”

7 And of the angels He says, “WHO MAKES HIS ANGELS WINDS, AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE.”

8 But of the Son [He says], “THY THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM.

9 “THOU HAST LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; THEREFORE GOD, THY GOD, HATH ANOINTED THEE WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE THY COMPANIONS.”

10 And, “THOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING DIDST LAY THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORKS OF THY HANDS;

11 THEY WILL PERISH, BUT THOU REMAINEST; AND THEY ALL WILL BECOME OLD AS A GARMENT,

12 AND AS A MANTLE THOU WILT ROLL THEM UP; AS A GARMENT THEY WILL ALSO BE CHANGED. BUT THOU ART THE SAME, AND THY YEARS WILL NOT COME TO AN END.”

13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, “SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I MAKE THINE ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR THY FEET”?

14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?

Heb 2:1 ¶ For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away [from it.]

2 For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense,

3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard,

At this point, I asked the class to tell me, “What did you hear?” Ask yourself the same question and read it again. Make notes, either in your Bible or a notebook of what you have heard. It boils down to the classic questions of asking, who, what, when, where, and how.

2:1 of Hebrews then becomes our central verse: For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away [from it.]

And from a couple other versions:

Heb 2:1 ¶ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. {let…: Gr. run out as leaking vessels} (KJV)

Heb. 2:1 We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. (NIV)

Then, we asked ourselves what have we not heard, missed hearing, or refused to hear. It is important to “learn” to hear the spoken word in the world and age in which we now live – and even more important to hear God, because, “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Rm. 10:17)

I urge you to read aloud the Scriptures to each other. You could do this after a sit-down meal together. And, with access to the internet you can find free Bibles for listening. The one we read last year and are reading this year is the ESV version. It is a good listening version. http://www.esvbible.org/esv/browse/
