LBS Study notes

Wish I didn’t go into “entertainment” mode.  I do so enjoy the girls, and my sister came, and we all love to talk, and we love to wonder – like, since Adam and Eve were in God’s image, they weren’t going to die; so what else do we need to understand about the tree of life –   …..and we love to talk…..And, I will do some more work on the Tree of Life.

Here are some notes, but, you will not get everything that was said!

From the beginning God establishes the principle that like begets like. The seed bears the likeness.

Ge1:11 Then God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, [and] fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with seed in them, on the earth”; and it was so.  12 And the earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.

Ge1:21 And God created the great sea monsters, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good.

Ge1:24 ¶ Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind”; and it was so.  25 And God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.

Like begetting like did not end with vegetation, animals on land and in the sea – it includes mankind – but, with a difference.  The man would contain the seed and the woman would bear fruit:

Ge 1:26 ¶ Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  27 And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 And God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

The created plants, animals, and man had “seed” for the purpose of bearing fruit after its kind – for nourishment.  That fruit would
contain “seed” after its kind – to bear more fruit – and on and on…

Ge 1:29 ¶ Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;

GOD CAUSES THE GROWTH FOR THE VEGETATION AND TREES TO BE PLEASING TO THE SIGHT, AS WELL AS GOOD FOR FOOD:

Ge 2:8 ¶ And the LORD God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.  9 And out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

(THE TREE OF LIFE WOULD BE GOOD FOR FOOD, ALONG WITH THE TREE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL.  Both of these trees bore fruit with the seed in it to bear another tree which would bear fruit, which would……Just ask Johnny Appleseed.  Also, Gen. 1:29 said that EVERY tree would be good for food.  They partook of these two named trees in reverse order – or would have if not prevented from doing so.)

There was a change in Adam and Eve’s “image of God” after partaking of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Ge 3:6 ¶ When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make [one] wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.  7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.

The “image” of Adam begets like:  Ge 5:1 ¶ This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.  2 He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created.  3 When Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of [a son] in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.  (No mention of Cain and Abel as in Adam’s image.  God begins Adam’s image with Seth.)

Cain and Abel are not said to be in Adam’s image!Ge 4:1
¶ Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with [the help of] the LORD.”  2 And again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

(Perhaps why is that this is actually the account of Eve “bearing fruit.” Or, that, Cain, being a type of the Jew belongs to God’s creation which will be the bearer of the “Seed” of Abraham / the “Seed” of David.)

ONCE – and only once – a woman (named such because she was built from bone of man’s bone and flesh of man’s flesh) will be born containing the “Seed” of the Second Adam – Who is God’s image incarnate.

Ge 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
