The Destroyer of the Firstborn, part 5…

Some New Testament passages for your consideration, warning, and studying:

(a reminder: “eternal” is literally, “age” – a measured period of time, which the Bible expresses as the “age to come,” which is the coming Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus, the Christ.)

2Th 1:5 – 10 – ¶ This is a plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which indeed you are suffering. 6 For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed–for our testimony to you was believed.

Mt 13:41-43 – “The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 “Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

Mt 13:49 “So it will be at the end of the age; the angels shall come forth, and take out the wicked from among the righteous,

Mt 13:50 and will cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Quote from Lang: “When God executes judgment, His wrath is guided with strict discrimination. He distinguished between Abel and Cain. He saved Noah and his family. He delivered righteous Lot from the overthrow of Sodom. In the days of Ezekiel, He set a mark upon each who sighed and cried over all the abominations that blighted Jerusalem, and He forbade the destroying angels to touch these, though no others were to be spared (Ezek. 9). It must always be thus, and it was to be so that night in Egypt.”

So what distinguished the Israelites that night? We have much evidence that they were immoral idol worshippers – and, continued to be so. They were not “better” than the Egyptians. They had – and were going to again – serve false gods. And, Moses had to remind God – so to speak – that the descendants of Abraham did not even know the name of the God of Abraham. Ex 3:11- 16 – ¶ But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 And He said, “Certainly I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.” 13 Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I shall say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.‘ Now they may say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” 14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.'” 15 And God, furthermore, said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations. 16 ¶ “Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, “I am indeed concerned about you and what has been done to you in Egypt.

On Monday – On what ground could the Israelites be spared?
