The Destroyer of the Firstborn, part 4…

Ex 12:23 “For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you.

Here is the literal translation by Young: `And Jehovah hath passed on to smite the Egyptians, and hath seen the blood on the lintel, and on the two side-posts, and Jehovah hath passed over the opening, and doth not permit the destruction to come into your houses to smite. Jehovah (the covenant-making name of Lord) would be passing each house with the destroying angel, preventing the destruction of the firstborn in each house where there was blood on the lintel and the two side posts. (Thus, establishing “passover” that the Lord will be commanding them to observe.)

I’m going to quote Lang here: “This great destroyer is a distinct figure in Holy Scripture. He acts here; he smote Israel in the days of David – 2 Sam. 24: 15, 16; II Chron. 21:14, 15; he destroyed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night – Isa. 37:36 – and in Rev. 9:11, in connection with one of the appalling judgments of the End days, his very name is given in its Hebrew and Greek forms, Abaddon and Apollyon, both meaning Destroyer. All the ancient world knew of him and dreaded him. To him they attributed the unexpected deaths of men, as the Greeks said, “Apollo has shot him with his arrow.” Abaddon is here described as the angel ruler of the Abyss, the world of the dead. The word is found at Job 26:6; 28:22; 31:12; Ps. 88:11; Prov. 15:11; 27:20, only. In each case it is associated with Death and Sheol, the world of the dead; and the passages range from about 1000B.C. To 1700 B.C., which includes the period of the Exodus.”

Ps. 78:49 mentions a band of destroying angels: He sent upon them His burning anger, Fury, and indignation, and trouble, A band of destroying angels. In our Exodus account, there was the mighty destroying angel – the head of the angels of evil. These are all angels who eagerly inflict evil; however, all in the ultimate control of the LORD, Jehovah! All of the preceding plagues had been inflicted by angels (see: Ps 78:49 above), now – the destroyer and his hosts would perform the last plague stayed only because of one item – the shed blood of a substituted first-born.

Ex 12:30 And Pharaoh arose in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no home where there was not someone dead.

Tomorrow – some passages for your consideration of the now and future works of the destroyer and his hosts of angels of evil.
