The Destroyer of the Firstborn, part 2…

Another Pharaoh is in power as we begin today’s mini study. The new king does not know Joseph, who died at 110 years old. The word “new” means: “of a different kind” in Ex. 1:8 – Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. This king was an Assyrian: Isa 52:4 For thus says the Lord GOD, “My people went down at the first into Egypt to reside there, then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.

So – this new Pharaoh observes that the “people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we.” He strikes them with hard labor and commands the midwives to kill all the sons of the Hebrews. The midwives feared God and did not obey and gave the king “reasons” for their inabilities to do so when they were called in to give an account to him. God was good to the midwives and Israel multiplied. Pharaoh then gives a command to all his people, not just the midwives: Ex 1:22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive.”

The New Testament, in Hebrews, gives us a nice summary of the faith of Moses’ parents and the choices, by faith, that Moses made: Heb 11:23 – 28 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; 25 choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God, than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin; 26 considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing Him who is unseen. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that he who destroyed the first-born might not touch them.

(Quote, from Lang: “Pharaoh was enslaving that chosen race and had designed their absorption into his people, by killing the boys and marrying the girls to Egyptians.”)

God sends word, through Moses, to Pharaoh: “Israel is My son, My firstborn: and I have said unto thee, Let My son go that he may serve Me; and thou hast refused to let him go: behold, I will slay thy son, thy firstborn.” (EX.4:22,23)
