Angels from the Realms of Glory, part 2…

Cherubims guarded the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden and their images, cast in gold, hovered over the Ark of the Covenant. They are classified as angels of the highest order because of the Scripture’s recording of their duties.

(Gen 3:24) So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed (“placed as in a tabernacle”) the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned every direction, to guard the way to the tree of life.

The Lord made His communication and meeting with the sons of Israel to be between the two cherubims covering the mercy seat:

(Exo 25:18) “And you shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat.

(Exo 25:19) “And make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end; you shall make the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat at its two ends.

(Exo 25:20) “And the cherubim shall have their wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings and facing one another; the faces of the cherubim are to be turned toward the mercy seat.

(Exo 25:22) “And there I will meet with you; and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, I will speak to you about all that I will give you in commandment for the sons of Israel.

Cherubim(s)” is mentioned around 91 times in the Bible and a quick search and reading gives me an overall assessment of their importance and duties. Both of the above references refer to a tabernacle. The first instance prevents man from meeting God in His preferred place. The second one gives His appointed high priest access into His chosen, innermost place in the tabernacle to worship and receive redemption – once a year – for the sons of Israel.
