…a Bible student's notes…

Posts will be a little sparse…

I am not fond of holidays, but I am terribly fond of seeing all my family and friends for laughter and feasting; so posts to this blog may get a little sparse.  My physical condition is not favorable for serious study, either.  “I am afflicted so that I may learn His statues.”

Here’s an article from my January, 2002, newsletter:

It’s a New Year – let’s think “healthy”

Been reading in 1st and 2nd Timothy.

See that phrase in 1 Timothy 1:10 – “sound doctrine?”  The word “sound” is a medical term (used by Dr. Luke in Luke 5:31; 7:10; 15:27 – “safe and sound”) – #5198 – from #5199 “hugies” – from base of #837 – “to grow.”  “To have sound health, to be well in body.”  Our English word “hygiene” is a derivative.

Used in 3 John 2 – “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

So, I got to thinking about the terms used with this word in the Timothys and Titus:

“Sound doctrine,”

“Sound words,”

“Sound in the faith,”

“Sound speech.”

Now, in your mind, go back and replace the word “sound” with “healthy.”  Then, read these short letters to these young men and judge yourself.  Are you REALLY healthy?

Diet and exercise articles abound this time of year – and I’m attempting to talk myself into loosing weight! – But, no matter what we think or do, that’s not REAL health.

Now, an article on physical diet and exercise is useful – even “bodily exercise does profit a little” – but, I’m wondering what it would be like to be “healthy in the faith” and know and understand “healthy doctrine,” as well as produce “healthy words and speech.”

Know what else I’m thinkin’?  That healthy doctrine, faith, speech and words could just produce a healthy spirit and soul, which, in turn would affect the body!  Is that what 3 John 2 is alluding to?

Just not any ole doctrine is healthy. 🙂 Go to the context in 1 Timothy and in the next verse (1:11) you will find the “healthy teaching” Paul is referring to – “The gospel of the glory (lit.) of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.”

So, you must know what was Paul’s gospel – committed to him –because -“In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to MY gospel.”  Romans 2:16

One reason it is “healthy” is because one day you and I are going to be judged by it!  “The gospel of the glory” – believed and lived (“faithed”) – changes you from the outside in, as well as the inside out!  It gives you hope – Col. 1:27.

And, at the Judgment Seat of Christ, I prefer a “Well done, thou good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of the Lord (i.e. His glory)” rather than the implied opposite – “Poorly done, Mary, you are not permitted to enter the joy of the Lord. We never have to read another so-called healthy article in a magazine or book.  We already possess the only Healthy Book containing the only healthful teaching. ♥
