Nabal and Abigail – “the hidden meeting”…

1Sa 25:20 And it came about as she was riding on her donkey and coming down by the hidden part of the mountain, that behold, David and his men were coming down toward her; so she met them.(NASB)

My friend comments:

The plot thickens! The advancement of a humble woman before the one who is ready to attack! They nearly collide with contrasting thoughts and intents of the heart and purpose, in the covert of the hill. I should think she nearly stumbles into him. It’s sudden! He’s coming from this hiding place as she is entering it.”

Mary here: There is a lot about this verse that I am not fully comprehending. Both David and his men were “coming down” as well as Abigail “coming down” the hidden (covert) part of the mountain. How is it that they both were “coming down?”

After a little research, I find that this is a matter of geography: David was coming down mount Paran (BDB Definition: Paran = “place of caverns” – wilderness area bounded on the north by Palestine, on the west by the wilderness of Etham, on the south by the desert of Sinai, and on the east by the valley of Arabah; the exodus was through this area and probably all 18 stops were in this area); Abigail was coming down from Carmel (BDB Definition:

Carmel = “garden-land” 1) a mountain on the Mediterranean coast of northern Israel, just below Haifa 2) a town in the mountains on the west side of the Dead Sea and south of Hebron).

(Bet you knew that already.)

Abigail is riding a donkey. What mounts do David and his men have? I’m thinking none.

Abigail’s “fruit of her labors” have preceded her, remember: 1Sa 25:18 “¶ Then Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves of bread and two jugs of wine and five sheep already prepared and five measures of roasted grain and a hundred clusters of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs, and loaded them on donkeys. 1Sa 25:19 And she said to her young men, “Go on before me; behold, I am coming after you.” ….”

How many donkeys loaded with good things had David passed when he meets the wealthy woman with her plea?

My friend notes:

I really think that it is with wisdom that Abigail did her alms before the Lord not before men (including her husband who is not aligned with her under the authority of God). She obediently doesn’t tell her husband. Like the believer who prays silently, humble and righteous and before in the prayer closet rather than a religious performance before the audience like the Pharisees. The servants who go on before her also remind me that there are ministering spirits who are sent to lead me and guide me toward the kingdom. They are taking her treasure to ―her secret holding tank‖ to be examined on that day! She will receive her reward! This was done for the anointed king of Israel! She knows David! She believed Samuel! (Ps 44:21, Prov. 11:13)”
