Letters to Theophilus, part 2

Did ya’ write your Biblical definition of “friend?”  It can get to be a laborious task to put it in a “nutshell.”  I am not so good at “nutshells.”  I did notice that there was a negative definition of “friend,” as well as a positive one.

A friend will know the Lord’s will and purpose and obey His will with humbleness from a servant’s heart of loyalty and love.  She will not accuse the Lord of unfairness to His friends; but, will persist in her asking for her daily bread (the broken body of our Lord).  A friend of God will in no way attach herself to this world’s system.  Believing God (having faith) is a moment by moment possession that guides and propels her lifestyle in righteousness.  The friend of God recognizes the Bridegroom’s voice and dresses appropriately for the upcoming events, such as the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

That definition does not do justice to the depth of importance of striving to become our Lord’s friend.  And, the word, “friend,” also has the connotation of “lover,” as well.

Love God with all you have

Mr 12:30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’  Mr 12:31 “The second is this, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Mr 12:33 AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE’S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

Disciples love one another

Joh 13:35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Keeping Commandments is Loving God

Joh 14:15 ¶ “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

Joh 14:21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me; and he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him, and will disclose Myself to him.”

Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him.

1Jo 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.  1Jo 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.

Love Him more than our own lives

Joh 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

Ro 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to [His] purpose.

1Co 2:9 but just as it is written, “THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.”  1Co 2:10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.

Re 12:11 “And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even to death.

The Blessedness and Reward of Loving Him

Jas 1:12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which [the Lord] has promised to those who love Him.

Jas 2:5 Listen, my beloved brethren: did not God choose the poor of this world [to be] rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?

1Pe 1:8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,

Loving God enables Giving to Brothers in Need

1Jo 3:17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?

1Jo 4:8 The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Nothing to Fear

1Jo 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.

1Jo 4:19 We love, because He first loved us.

Keep Yourselves in the Love of God

Jude 1:21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.
