…a Bible student's notes…

More on context…..

Lately I read this portion from Isa. 55:6-9      6 ¶ Seek the LORD while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.
 Isa 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; And let him return to the LORD, And He will have compassion on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.
 Isa 55:8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD.
 Isa 55:9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

The underlines are mine to let you see to whom the Lord is speaking when He says that “His ways are higher than your ways (the wicked in v.7 who must forsake his own ways)  and His thoughts than your thoughts (the unrighteous’ thoughts).  That is another verse that I have heard many times out of context.  “Well, God’s ways and are not my ways and His thoughts are higher than my thoughts.”  You can say that if you are unrighteous and wicked!  Because that is whom the Lord is addressing.  And, in the midst of these words is the rest of verse 7:  …let him return to the LORD, And He will have compassion on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.”  When the unrighteous and wicked return to the LORD, He has compassion and will abundantly pardon.  Now, compassion and pardon might be thoughts and ways higher than ours, but not the Lord’s.

In 1 Corinthians 2, we are encouraged to “have (value and esteem) the mind of Christ” – v.16.  But, the context surrounding this thought is the theme:  “We speak wisdom among those who are mature.”  And, the literal rendering of v. 13 is “not by teachings of human wisdom in words, but by teachings of spirit to spiritual ones, spiritual things explaining.”  The spirit and mind of Christ “well-pleased” the Father.  Our Lord never wavered from “not my will, but Thine be done.”  This very mind-set in our innermost spirit will enable us to penetrate the depths of God’s thoughts and His ways.

I will paste here 1 Cor. 2:6-16 for your enjoyment and meditation:

 1Co 2:6 ¶ Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away;
 1Co 2:7 but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom, which God predestined before the ages to our glory;
 1Co 2:8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;
 1Co 2:9 but just as it is written, “THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.”
 1Co 2:10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.
 1Co 2:11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man, which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.
 1Co 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things freely given to us by God,
 1Co 2:13 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.
 1Co 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.
 1Co 2:15 But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no man.
 1Co 2:16 For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE SHOULD INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ. (NAS)

Note:  In v. 7 , is posted the very theme and context of the whole of God’s Word.  It is revealed by the spirit “out of” God (v.12) that God predetermined before the ages were framed to bring us into our full glory.
