…a Bible student's notes…

Your Breath is Your Spirit, part one……..

I just gotta’ begin a series on “spirit.”  “Spirit” in the Bible just could be the number one misunderstanding we have as humans.  It is misused, misjudged, misguided.  It is disregarded, discounted, deemed as unimportant.  Most of all it is misdefined.

A couple of years ago I copied, in handwriting, every “spirit” reference in the New Testament so as to let the Bible, itself, define “spirit” for me.  When I study this way, I make notes of the phrases and words – context – surrounding the word which I am studying for understanding.

As an example, I will copy a few for you here without the specific reference.  You will recognize them and these will tell you what the spirit in you does or can do.  If faith can be known by its works, spirit can be known by what it does.  This is NOT the whole study, just an example:

  • Poor in spirit
  • Willing spirit
  • Unclean spirit
  • Perceived in spirit
  • Spirit ready and willing
  • Spirit rejoices
  • Spirit can wax strong
  • Manner of spirit
  • Troubled in spirit
  • Stirred spirit
  • Pressed in spirit
  • Purposed in spirit
  • Bound in spirit
  • Led by spirit
  • Served with spirit
  • Mind of the spirit
  • Spirit of slumber
  • Fervent in spirit
  • Refreshed spirit
  • No rest in spirit
  • Spirit of faith
  • Spirit needs cleansing
  • Walk in same spirit as another
  • Spirit of weakness
  • Spirit of wisdom and revelation
  • Spirit of your mind
  • Prayer and supplication in spirit
  • Worship in spirit
  • Troubled, shaken in spirit
  • Sanctified in spirit by belief of the truth
  • Spirit can lust and envy
  • Sanctification of the spirit
  • Obey through spirit
  • Meek and quiet spirit
  • Spirit of antichrist
  • Spirit of truth and error
  • In spirit
  • Carried away in spirit
  • Spirit of prophecy

Looks like the whole study, doesn’t it!  Nope.

I need to remind you of a couple of verses to think upon:

You are an entity consisting of three individual elements: ( I like this definition of entity: “An organized array of individual elements and parts forming and working as a unit.”)

1Th 5:23 ¶ Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

NOTICE:  This “entire” entity could possibly NOT be preserved complete (optative mood) – blameless – at the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Then there is Hebrews 4:12.  I love this verse!  Please study God’s Word so this can happen to you.  It is most blessed!

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

 Last one:

2Co 7:1 ¶ Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Your spirit needs cleansing from all defilement (filthiness).  NOT so that it can be “saved,” or already has been “saved.”  This verse is written to “the church of God” at Corinth, with “all the saints!”

That is the verse that sent me to my study of “spirit.”  I want a clean spirit!!
