The Reason the Son of God appeared……

1 John 3:8b…”The Son of God appeared for this purpose, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” (NAS)

I have been awake most all night thinking about this verse and decided to just get up and start writing about it.

I had the thought that never had I been to a school or church Christmas play where the children shepherds looked into the manger and said, “We are so glad You are here to destroy the works of our adversary.”  I’m pretty sure the shepherds didn’t say that!  But, listen to what they heard and believed:  “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people; for today in the city of David (a king) there has been born for you a Savior (Deliverer), Who is Christ (the Messiah) the Lord.”

You know how I know they believed what they heard?  Verse 15: “And it came about when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds began saying to one another, ‘Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this THING (“rhema”) that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.’”

What happened to their sheep?  Were there substitute shepherds?  Did they shepherd their sheep along their route?  I don’t know.  But, verse 16 says that they came in haste.  And, when they left, verse 17 tells us that they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child.

The shepherds believed because they hastened to go check out this EVENT which THE LORD had made known to them.  (BTW – They didn’t say the angels made this known to them.)  Then, they left this scene to tell what had been revealed to them concerning this CHILD.  The message?  A Child, born in David’s city, is the Deliverer, the Messiah.  Then, verse 20 says that the shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.  I think they sang the song of the heavenly hosts of angels: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”

BTW – Did you notice that in verse 19 that Mary, having heard the things the shepherds told, “treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.”

To “destroy the works of the adversary” who is in the place of rulership over the earth, another Ruler must qualify for the position.  The present government must be removed.  Look at where the government will be put:

Isa 9:6 – 7:  “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.  There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.”

When the shepherds viewed this scene and the child in the manger, they saw a new government being set into place and rejoiced to “see His Day.”
