Philippians and the Day of Christ

Know why there are so many references to “joy” and “rejoice” in the four-chapter book of Philippians?  Because its theme is:  How to Live until the Day of Christ Jesus and Participate in that Day!  The joy set before our Lord was “His Day” – the 7th Day – the one thousand years when He will be King of all other kings and Lord of all other Lords.  A faithful servant of His, now, will be invited to “enter the joy of the Lord” because of that servant’s “well-doing.”  REJOICE!!

“Joy” and “rejoice” appear 20 times in this letter.  But, let me show you why I chose my theme.

Chapter 1, verses 6 and 10:   6- For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
 10 -so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ;

Chapter 2, verse 16 – holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may have cause to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.

Chapter 3, verse 20 –  For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;

Chapter 4, verse 5 –   Let your forbearing spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near (at hand).

Check out these verses, also:

 Php 1:19 For I know that this shall turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
 Php 1:20 according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I shall not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ shall even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

 Php 2:9 Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,
 Php 2:10 that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE SHOULD BOW, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and
under the earth,
 Php 2:11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

 Php 3:8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ,
 Php 3:9 ¶ and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
 Php 3:10 that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;
 Php 3:11 in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
 Php 3:12 Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.
 Php 3:13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,
 Php 3:14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
 Php 3:15 ¶ Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you;
 Php 3:16 however, let us keep living by that same standard to which we have attained.
 Php 3:17 ¶ Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.

 Php 4:17 Not that I seek the gift itself, but I seek for the profit which increases to your account.
 Php 4:18 But I have received everything in full, and have an abundance; I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus what you have sent, a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God.

Now – here are my chapter headings:

Chapter 1 – Defending the Good News of Christ Jesus

Chapter 2 – Humility, the Basis of Soul Salvation

Chapter 3 – Attaining to the Out-resurrection from among the dead

Chapter 4 – Rejoice – Pray – Think These Things = Contentment!
