…a Bible student's notes…

Trying Your Patience ……..

Today’s notes are from my journal dated 12/10/2008 and are random thoughts and word studies from Hebrews 12:1, with continuing thoughts from chapter 11.   Such snippets of information can be frustrating if you cannot put them together.  Get out your Bible and read chapter 11, with emphasis on verses 39-40, and pretend that the chapter 12 division is not there – keep reading verse 1 in the context of verses 11:39 and 40.  12:1 begins with “Therefore.”  It refers to 11:39.

Anyway, here it is:

THOUGHTS FROM HEBREWS 11:39-12:1

Wednesday, 12/10/2008

All those mentioned in Chapter 11 gained approval of their faith (pleasing God) – BUT – did not receive what they had “faithed.”  Why? Because God has something better for me!

NOTE:  Is this a method God still uses?  I go through tribulations, “faithing” God’s Word (of the kingdom) – experiencing mockings, destitutions, ill-treatment from family, friends, and foe – in order to receive a better resurrection.  This principle, at work in me, benefits perfection in me – and – them!

Chapter 12, “The consequence:”  – exhortation to follow the witnesses of faith in Ch. 11:

                    -DO NOT FAINT IN TRIALS

-REMOVE ALL BITTER ROOTS OF SIN

(Dear Mary, “Press on toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” – Phil. 3:14)  How to do this?

KJV – “lay aside every weight” – bending or bulging by its load, hindrance,

CLV – “putting off every impediment”

Strong’s – “cast off”     “the whole”

Thayer – “ 1.  Individually – each, every, all things

  1. 2.     collectively, some of all types”

(Dear Mary, What – Who keeps you heavy laden?  CAST IT OFF!!)

 Note from JFB:

“Weight” – As corporeal unwieldiness was, through a disciplinary diet, laid aside by candidates for the prize in racing;  so carnal and worldly lusts, and all, whether from without or within, that would impede the heavenly runner, are the spiritual weight to be laid aside.

“Encumbrance,” all superfluous weight; the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life, and even harmless and otherwise useful things which would positively retard us.  (Mark 10:50, the blind man casting away his garment to come to Jesus; Mark 9:42-48; compare Eph. 4:22; Col. 3:9-10.)”

Note to me:  “Weight” can be an inordinate affection for a person, place, or thing.

RWP – “No trailing garment to hinder or trip one.”

Note to myself:  Mary, get rid of the attachment to get rid of the weight!

Barnes:  “What is crooked or hooked – hence, anything that is attached or suspended by a hook, that is, by its whole weight.”

Note to me:  If you don’t put “it” (the encumbrance) on in the first place, then you won’t be bothered with taking it off!

Quote:  (I failed to make note from whence I got this.)

“ They were careful in their training not to overburden themselves with food, and in every way to remove what would be an impediment or hindrance.  As applied to the racers it does not mean that they began to run with anything like a burden, and then threw it away – as persons sometimes aid their jumping by taking a stone in their hands to acquire increased momentum – but, that they were careful not to allow anything that would be a weight or an encumbrance.

Now, Mary – just like the “cloud of faithful witnesses” surrounds me, there is the “encircling sin” close by to beset me!

Barnes quote: “Standing well around – what is near or at hand, or readily occurring – easy to encircle – the sin which easily winds around us and hinders our course.”

Thayer:  “”Sin – to be without a share in.”

Mary, This is THE Sin which will prevent me from sharing in Christ’s coming kingdom!

Another thought J – Since the context is faith, (pleasing God, in 11:6, – then – THE SIN is NOT pleasing God!  Verse 2 says that Jesus is the “author and perfector of faith.”  “WHATEVER is not of faith is SIN.” – Rm. 14:23

Yet, another thought! – see ch. 10:26-31 for “The Sin.”

Quote – ?-   “The sin that doth so easily beset us; the sin that has the greatest advantage against us, by the circumstances we are in, our constitution, our company.  This may mean either the damning sin of unbelief or rather the darling sin of the Jews – an over-fondness for their own dispensation.”

Note to me -“Run with endurance (and lawfully) the race that is set (appointed) to me!!

 Endurance – Strong’s # 5281  “Hupomone”

Thayer’s definition:  “The characteristic of a man who is not swerved from his deliberate purpose and his loyalty to faith and piety by even the greatest trials and sufferings.”

Note to me:  So, Mary, how are you going to live this “mini” study today?

I must declutter!!  Clutter is anything that complicates my life and prevents me from living in peace as I love and live out God’s purpose in my life.  Clutter is anything unused, unwanted, or unneeded that impedes my race of faith that pleases God.

Declutter –    Detatch   –   RUN for my life – the preferred life in the age to come!
