…a Bible student's notes…

“Good” thoughts – a page from my journal

03/12/2009 – Thursday – Been thinking about Romans 8:28 one phrase at a time and have hand written some things in my prayer notebook.  This morning I am meditating upon the phrase “work together for good.”  The word, “good,” is so general that I could just read across it and go on.  This time, by slowing down, I might learn something.

“Good” appears at least 102 times in the N. T.; and I want to mention a few to form a new respect for this Biblical word.

First, by contrast, let’s see where “good(ness)” is NOT Gen. 6:5:

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. {every…: or, the whole imagination: the Hebrew word signifieth not only the imagination, but also the purposes and desires} {continually: Heb. every day}  (KJV)

– Mt 15:19 – For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: (KJV)

There are a lot more, of course; but I need to know that God is not like me!  Every good thing comes from Him, and Him, alone!

Mt 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Mt 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God………..”

When I come to the word “good” in scripture,  I insert into my thinking “Godly,” and “profitable.”  And, I connect it to the “good things to come.”

So, when I am loving God, HE is causing, permitting, and using, all (every, each one) “thing” to work together from each individual part to be profitable on my account in the age to come.

( Ahhhh…. keep on loving Him, obeying Him, every moment, longing for His Word and presence, pleasing Him and gaining His approval.  Then, God, in His fullness, will, along with me, weave together the tapestry of my wedding garment.)
